How to choose trekking poles
Poles take load off your knees on descents and keep you steady on loose ground and river crossings.
Carbon or aluminum
Carbon poles are lighter and absorb vibration; aluminum bends instead of snapping and costs less. Both work for most treks.
Locks
Lever (quick) locks are easier to adjust with gloves than twist locks.
Length
Set the poles so your elbows are at about 90 degrees on flat ground, shorter for climbs and longer for descents.
Baskets and tips
Snow baskets stop poles sinking into snow and mud; rubber tips protect rock and roads.
