Trekking gear
Trekking gear for the Himalayas: poles, socks, warmth
You do not need expensive kit for a first Himalayan trek. A few well-chosen items make long days on rough trails much easier.
Poles save your knees
Long descents on loose scree are where poles help most. Adjustable poles also double as supports for a tarp or a camera.
Feet first
Good socks and broken-in boots prevent most trek-ending blisters. Pack one pair per two days and keep a dry pair for camp.
Cold nights
Even in summer, nights above 3,500 m can drop below freezing. Warm layers and a pair of hand warmers in the pack are cheap insurance.
