Headlamp buying guide for trekkers
Early starts, late arrivals and power cuts make a headlamp one of the most used items on any trek.
Brightness
Around 300 lumens is plenty for camp and trails. Higher outputs drain batteries quickly and are rarely needed.
Batteries
AAA batteries are sold in most villages; rechargeable packs need a power source. Lamps that take both are the most flexible.
Weather
Check the water rating. IPX4 survives rain; IPX7 and above survive a drop in a stream.
Red light
A red mode keeps your night vision and does not wake tent mates.
